Psychology calls this ‘performance orientation.’ We think we can jump
a tall building, like Superman. It’s only when we hit a detour, or even a
dead-end, that we stop to ponder and meditate.
While we’re on Life’s Journey, we need to be cautious!
Our personal ability, potential, success, drive
and ambition can sometimes get in the way of LIFE.
All of life must be pursued in balance.
It sure did mine did for awhile. As a new fledging lawyer, after I passed
the bar exam, I was offered a couple of jobs with firms. But they
wanted to pay so little, and work me such long hours, it didn’t seem like
a win-win situation to me. Three or four years later I was made a similar
offer from both the district attorney’s office and the public defender’s
office – but with the same type of pay and long hours.
I also had an opportunity to go to work for the FBI as an agent. But in
an interview I discovered they could relocate me anywhere in the world
on short notice, and I had no say in the matter. I was pretty fond of
Colorado USA, and didn’t want that type of stress.
I Made One of these CHOICES We’re Talking About
I wanted to make a bigger statement with my life, and of course make
more money. In my enthusiasm to succeed, I decided to take the bull by
the horns, hang out my shingle, and go at law practice solo.
So I tuned up my guitar and decided to sing in nightclubs at night – and
of course pass out business cards at the breaks. It was a wise CHOICE,
which is what we’ve been talking about.
Where do you meet people who need an attorney? One great place is
out drinking at night and trying to forget their problems. Both Denver
newspapers – The Rocky Mountain News and The Denver Post must
