Square Knot or Sailor's Knot

One of the easiest knots to tie and
the best knot for certain purposes,
the Square Knot is simply two
Overhand Knots. But, be careful
when tying, otherwise, the knot will
go wrong.
The rule is this: If you begin the
first knot by forming an overhand
loop, do the same with the second
knot (fig. 1). Or> in other words, if
you cross the end in front of the
standing part to tie the first knot, do

it the same way for the second (fig.
,
, 2).
This applies when using a single
end to form the Square Knot. When
tying two ends of a short rope, it is
just as well to work with one end, so
as to keep the rule in mind.
The Square Knot is sometimes
appropriately called the "Flat Knot"
because it actually flattens when
pulled tight (fig. 3).
