Is This What Freedom Is?
Way back in the burning dead heat of June,
I couldn’t fall asleep under a bright silvery moon.
The very next day I would be on a plane,
To the country where Wilhelm had his reign.
We arrived at the airport with my green suitcase packed tight, And all I could hear were jumbo jets taking flight.
We weren’t the first; Br. Tom beat us there,
But I was far too excited to attempt to care.
Soon all my friends arrived with their suitcases full,
All ready for the plane’s dark cold hull.
After checking our bags we stood for a picture,
But every parent said, “One more!” stricter and stricter.
Security came next, but it was over in a flash,
Thank God because without a belt my pants almost fell with a crash. On the other side we made a beeline for the gate,
Because all of us had for so long awaited that date.
After what seemed like an eternity before we could board,
As the plane taxied my spirits again soared.
In my mouth I had the burning mint flavor of my gum,
And when the plane was in the air my heart beat like a drum.
We were finally on our way to a land so strange,
I could hardly get my thoughts to arrange.
I slid down in my seat and thought I would read my book,
But the smooth cold plastic cover, for today, gave it a boring look.
