Katie Sutton ’19 was this year‘s winner of the Parma Rotary Club Speech Contest. Sutton presented a compelling speech about the beneft of understanding and accepting mental illness in today’s society. Tis is the ninth year in a row that a Padua student has earned this distinction.Sutton advanced to the regional com-petition and took third place. Regionals featured winners from 37 clubs in Northeast Ohio. Katie made Padua especially proud by placing among a majority of high school seniors. She won $750 for her speech.Rotary Club Speech Contest Robotics Club Visits Hyland SoftwareOur Robotics Club took a feld trip to Hyland Sof-ware in April. Tey learned a lot about Northeast Ohio’s largest sofware company. Students participated in the “Hour of Code,” which is a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in more than 180 countries. Tey were also treated to a ride down Hyland’s “silver bullet” slide.Over the spring, Brian Bowne ’18 completed his Eagle Scout Project titled Polish Village Pocket Park. He spruced up a vacant lot in Parma with a brick walkway, seating area, and planted trees and shrubs near 5700 Ridge Road. He earned his Eagle Scout rank in June 2017.Brian Bowne ’18 with his Scoutmaster Robert Gademer ’78. Bruin Becomes an Eagle ScoutRachel George ’18 received her Gold Award, which is the Girl Scouts’ highest honor. Rachel designed and built an art cart for the use and comfort of children who are patients at Cleveland Clinic’s Fairview Hospital. She created the cart with an assortment of artistic activities and crafs using donated materials she collected. Te cart carries multiple copies of each activity as well as instructions Rachel wrote. Various activities can be rotated onto the cart for variety, a process facilitated by the activity catalog Rachel created.
