I Knew the First Time
Sunshine and Her Love
I knew the first time you smiled at me.
Your eyes were warm and already looked at me with care. You jokes slipped off of your lips, into my ears,
and filled me with warmth.
Your smile made me smile even more.
I knew the first time we spent all night talking. We spoke in hushed whispers
We didn’t want to be overheard.
We stayed up until the moon’s bedtime,
Her brother was about to wake.
We did not notice as the hours moved,
To us time was moving as slow as a dead man’s heartbeat.
I knew when you hugged me.
Lingering longer and longer each hug you gave me. Holding me tight like a child holds their teddy bear, But gentle as if I could shatter like glass.
Your cologne became a familiar smell of sweetness. The loud thudding from my heart echoed in my ears
I knew when you first held my hand. Your soft hand held mine tightly,
As if you were scared to let go.
I knew then and I know now. I hope you know too.

She rises from her bed,
Her shimmering rays poking
Through her blanket of clouds.
Her love watches in the distance.
He is laying in bed after a night’s work.
He works the night shift,
She the day.
He is cold and dark.
She is bright and warm.
Her purpose is to give life.
He doesn’t know his.
He wants to love her,
To spell his love with the stars,
To have the waves carve her beauty in the sand. But he is only a far away lover
And she, the greatest love of all.
