Answer Key to Summative Assessment
          (see rubrics on page 87)

The Answer Key offers possible answers to the Summative Assessment questions. Students’ answers
will vary. remember to accept any answer that the student can justify from the text.

          Answers might include:
           1. The passengers were on board a ship, traveling from San Francisco to Yokahama in Japan. It was shortly after the
             end of World War I.
           2. Any three of:
              – Mr. Kelada was wealthy and well-traveled, not usually the case for an ‘inferior’ foreigner.
              – Mr. Kelada did not address him as ‘Mr.’
              – Mr. Kelada was dark-skinned and hook-nosed.
              – He was very chatty.
(Answers will vary. Accept any responses that can be supported by the text.)

           3. A ‘know-all’ is usually an unpleasant person who thinks he or she is better than everyone else and knows
everything. In the case of this story, however, Mr. Kelada was a very accomplished and successful person who
was unfairly judged by the narrator simply because he was not an Englishman.
           4. a. Problem solving
              b. t is not clear whether the other passengers agreed with the narrator’s negative attitude to Mr. Kelada.
               I
Perhaps only the narrator saw things that way. There are indications that the other passengers liked Mr.
Kelada more than the narrator did – Mr. Kelada was involved in all the social events and even the narrator said
“he was a good mixer”. Mr. Ramsay and Mr. Kelada argued endlessly, so they must have found some enjoyment
in this. In the end, Mr. Kelada did Mrs. Ramsay a good turn, so at least she must have liked him. Everyone on
board enjoyed the joke when Mr. Know All lost the bet, and mocked him, but this can also happen when
someone is liked, all in good spirit. Possibly only the narrator hated Mr. Kelada.

              c. The HOTS I chose to use to answer the question was Problem solving , as I identified the question as a
problem and tried to find the solution in the text.
( Students could also choose Distinguishing different perspectives or Inferring, as long as these approaches are
supported by use of the text and can be explained. Accept all logical responses.)

           5. This information helps me understand why the narrator is so negative about Mr. Kelada even before he meets
him and keeps mentioning all the bad aspects of his behavior until the time of the bet.
