Answer Key to Summative Assessment
(see Rubrics on page 87)
The answer Key offers possible answers to the summative assessment questions. students’ answers
will vary. Remember to accept any answer that the student can justify from the text.
Answers might include:
1. They are the speaker and the traveler.
2. The sculptor is brought to life through his ability to model the statue’s face so well that the king’s passions have
‘survived’ his death. Ozymandias is brought to life through his words inscribed on the pedestal, which are so
cleverly crafted by the poet that the reader can ‘hear’ them booming across the sands of time.
3. Answers will vary. Accept all logical responses that students can support using the poem. Students must show
clearly that they understand the meaning of the literary term.
4. a. Inferring
b. The second part of the poem (the sestet) presents a broken, decaying statue of a once-powerful king in
the middle of an empty desert. This suggests the idea that even very powerful rulers and kings do not last
forever.
c. I used the skill of Inferring because this ‘message’ about political tyranny is not mentioned directly by the poet,
but can be understood by ‘reading between the lines.’
5. This information makes me understand that Shelley was not just writing to create interesting images, but that he
used his poetry for social criticism and he wanted his readers (like me) to think hard about the images he created
and understand what his message really was.
