In the late 1600s, Beaufort was a fishing village and port of safety that attracted patriots, privateers, merchants, and skilled craftsman who brought their unique building styles to the town. The
town has restored 150 of these historic homes, with plaques displaying their original owners and construction dates. Located in the heart of this historic site is the Beaufort Historic Site. This site depicts 18th and 19th-century coastal Carolina and is open to the public seven days a week from June to August and six days a week for the rest of the year. Guided tours are available by appointment.
Leffers Cottage and Garden— circa 1778. Originally the home to Samuel Leffers, who was the schoolmaster, merchant and clerk of the court. The rustic cottage now showcases artifacts depicting the daily chores in the Colonial period.
Carteret County Courthouse — circa 1796. Educat- ing today’s youth on the early American legal system, Carteret County Courthouse is the oldest wood-framed courthouse in North Carolina.
John C Mason House — circa 1825. The Mason House is an example of Bahamian architecture which is very prevalent in the Beaufort area.
Core Sound Waterfowl Museum and Heritage Center

Established in 1992, Core Sound houses the finest collection of decoys and waterfowl art in North Carolina. Along with this collection, the museum also archives oral histories and artifacts from the community. Step into the Smith Family Gathering Room and wonder through the Robert T. Monk Library to learn from the crafts and voices of the past. Museum hours are Monday through Saturday 10am to 5pm and Sunday 2pm to 5pm.

The History Place has an exterior that is a cross between a train depot and a mariner’s port,
which reflects the exhibits housed within its
walls. Everyday visitors can browse anything from maritime artifacts to modern art pieces created by local and regional artists. Explore these treasures of Carteret County by rambling through the Rodney B. Kemp Gallery and the Jack Spencer Goodwin Research Library. The History Center also features the Infusion Cafe, which serves fresh sandwiches, salads and soups and houses a tea room with hundreds of teas. The History Center offers visitors a uniquely artistic view of Carteret County.

Josiah Bell House — circa 1825. This Victorian house was once home to Josiah Fisher Bell. Bell was a Confed- erate agent who blew up several lighthouses at Cape Lookout during the Civil War.
The Old Jail — circa 1829. The Old Jail boasts legends of ghosts and one hanging in 1874. The Old Jail was in use until 1954.
Apothecary and Doctor’s Office — circa 1859. The apothecary houses a priceless collection of medicinal and pharmaceutical items, most of which were original to the shop. There is an herb garden behind the apoth- ecary and doctor’s office with examples of the herbs grown during Colonial times.

The North Carolina Maritime Museum’s mission
is “to preserve and interpret all aspects of the state’s rich maritime heritage through educational exhibits, programs, and field trips”, and that is what the museum accomplishes. From boat building to the skeleton of a sperm whale, visitors of all ages will learn a great deal about coastal life, as well as the sciences behind these endeavors. The Beaufort also houses many of the artifacts from Blackbeard’s wrecked Queen Anne’s Revenge. Museum is open Monday through Friday 9am to 5pm, Saturday 10am to 5pm and Sunday 1pm to 5pm.
