We test the compound in the laboratories of the Zoological Society of London and
discover that it induces a ‘sleep like’ trance state in both humans and primates,
making them very susceptible to persuasive suggestion. The same plant appears to have
an opposite effect on other beasts, driving them into a wild psychotic rabid frenzy.
The thought of the Congo and crazed animals lead me to relay my recent adventures
overseas. Grabbing the Journal of my travels, I relate them to my tale travelling
up the Congo on board a paddle steamer and the army of trained monkeys we
encountered.

Gradually the nights draw in, bringing with them a spell of exceptional prolonged
cold. It appears the onset of winter has given us a respite from the spate of animal
insanity.
