            Verb Phrase Interrupters
A verb phrase is sometimes interrupted by other words. The word not, or other adverbs like really or only are
            common interrupters.
               • He did not leave the food for his dog. (The verb phrase is did leave; not did not leave.)
               • John was really going to the store.

The subject of a question usually interrupts the verb phrase. Change the question to a statement to make it
easier to find the subject and the verb phrase.
               • Can we leave the soccer ball on the field?
               • We can leave the soccer ball on the field.
