The most important development of the period is undoubtedly the building of the Temple by Solomon.
David wanted to build it when he realized he had a castle while the ark dwelt in a tent (the tabernacle).
David asked Yahweh for permission to build it but Yahweh said he would use Solomon to build it. This
temple is called the First Temple or Solmon’s temple. It is called this because there have been others.
The first temple lasted from Solomon’s reign until 586 BCE when it was destroyed by the Babylonians.
The Second Temple period began after the Jews returned and built the second temple. It lasted until
Titus destroyed it in 70 A.D.
This comparison from Logos
software is an excellent aid for
visualizing the differences
between Solomon’s Temple and
the Second Temple (known as
Herod’s Temple). Logos has also
developed this recreation of the
inside of the temple that is quite
helpful for the student to
visualize the inside of this
magnificent structure.

It was built in Jerusalem;
some debate exists over the
site. The Ark of the Covenant
was housed in the Holy of
Holies between the
Cherubim. Notice the
location of the veil that was
torn when Jesus the Messiah
died on the cross. Also notice
the presence of the
lampstands. Some have
connected these lampstands
to the seven churches in
Revelation. This connection is
debated.
