Study Section 14: Chapter 12 – Fixing our Eyes on Jesus
14.1 Connect
Grand Canyon National Park, in Arizona in the US, is home to much of the immense Grand
Canyon, with its layered bands of red rock revealing years of geological history. Viewpoints
include Mather Point, Yavapai Observation Station and architect Mary Colter’s Lookout
Studio and her Desert View Watchtower. Lipan Point, with wide views of the canyon and
Colorado River, is a popular, especially at sunrise and sunset.
When you walk up to the edge of the canyon, literally your breath will be taken away. It is an amazing
experience. From the cliff’s edge, where you view the enormous canyon, you can look down into the
canyon a full mile deep and see a small river running through. In the distance you might see rain clouds
with lightening flashing. President Theodore Roosevelt said, “In the Grand Canyon, Arizona has a
natural wonder which, so far as I know, is in kind absolutely unparalleled throughout the rest of the
world.” When standing at the canyon, it totally captures your view.
As we walk through our lives, most people will never have the opportunity to view the Grand Canyon.
However, there is a more magnificant view available to everyone on a daily basis. In Hebrews 12 we will
discover that view. And the view is not a place, but a person. Let’s discover who that might be....
14.2 Objectives
1. The student should be able to define what encurbrances that are to be set aside in following
Christ.
2. The student should be able to describe the life of a believer whose eyes are fixed totally on
Jesus Christ.
3. The student should be able to explain the difference between progressive sanctification and
positional sanctification.

12:1 "Therefore" Verse 1 is an unusual triple compound (toigaroun) found only here and
in 1 Thess. 4:8. Based on the preceding examples of faithfulness, the readers are to live
godly lives that help and encourage others.
"cloud" "Cloud" is often used metaphorically in Greek literature of a group of people (cf.
Herodotus VIII.109).
"witnesses" This term can mean
1. A legal witness in court
