The main importance is that whatever the method used, the sermon should be firmly grounded in
Scripture with historical, cultural, grammatical, contextual, and geographical factors all carefully

What is Expository Preaching?
What is Expository Preaching – more details
The question we may ask is, “Does the Bible give us which of these types of preaching method is the
best approach? Is there a Biblical mandate for a method and if so, why?”
The Mandate for Expository Preaching
Both the Old and New Testament give precedent for expository preaching. The following two
verses speak of the ministries of Ezra (Old Testament) and Paul (New Testament), men who lived
hundreds of years apart, yet communicated the Word of God with thoroughness and clarity.
Consider these Scriptures:
So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to
understand the reading. (Nehemiah 8:8) Note the emphasis on reading the scriptures, explaining
the scriptures, and helping people to understand the scriptures.
For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God (Acts 20:27). Note the emphasis
on all the counsel of God. Nothing was skipped.
