Activity: Get a coin and flip it and count the number of “heads” or “tails“ you get in 20
flips. You should get about equal numbers in that range, half heads and half tails. Each time you flip a
coin, there is a 50-50 chance of getting heads and likewise tails. But to get heads 20 straight flips is very
unlikely. Try it and see if you can do that.

How were your results? You could sit there all day and most likely NOT get 20 straight heads. Can you
see that for two molecules to collide and join by chance is not within the realm of possibility? It would
be like putting the parts of a watch in a box and shaking the box. Do you ever think, no matter how long
you shook it, the parts would come together to form a watch? They would eventually wear each other
out from friction and never form a watch.
