Study Section 6: Chapters 16 - 21
6.1 Connect.
We live in an area where hurricanes come across the Atlantic Ocean and often times travel over
our state, causing severe destruction. Generally the weather reports warn everyone that a
huge hurricane is coming and to prepare for the destructive rain and high winds. In response,
most everyone prepares by purchasing food and water, boarding up their windows, and
purchasing fuel for power generators. Some people pack up a few things and leave their home
and travel several hundreds of miles inland to get away from the wrath of the weather. But as
amazing as it sounds, some people don’t prepare or heed the warnings. They go on life as usual. Many
of these people pay the price by losing their lives.
Isaiah today will be warning Israel to heed his warning of coming destruction because of their rebellion
against God. He prophetically will share how the destruction will come.
6.2 Objectives.
1. The student should be able to discuss how God promises to use foreign powers to judge Israel
yet promises destruction to these foreign nations because of their rebellion against God.
2. The student should be able to discuss how God judges Egypt, completely stripping her of pride
in every area—militarily, economically, politically, religiously—so that He can save some Egyptians
through Christ.
3. The student should be able to explain how Babylon and its allies are enemies of God and thus no
refuge for God’s people.
6.3 Chapter 16
V. 1-2 ‘Send the lamb’ of course may have Messianic reference, but here probably refers to
Moab sending tribute to Israel, trying to win favor and assistance. They sent lambs to Israel to
be sacrificed, which does of course point to Jesus.
V. 2 paints a pathetic picture of the women of Moab being like birds thrown out of their nest.
V. 3-5 The Moabites plead with Israel to take them in, to give them shelter. It seems contrary to
common sense that Israel would take in a former enemy. Romans 5: 8.
The Lord extended mercy to us while we were yet sinners. He expects us to follow His example.
V. 6-7 Moab had an issue with pride, as most of us do. Sometimes the only hope we have to be rescued
from our sin and pride is to be brought to complete submission. It would have been very humbling for
the Moabites to come to Israel, their enemy and one who had treated the Moabites with contempt.
