P. 67
V. 2-6 This prayer is a sign of Judah’s desperation. They have tried every other avenue to protect their
nation, and now, as a last resort, they turn to God.
How does God feel about someone coming to Him for help when they have sinned grievously by seeking
answers elsewhere? God is always waiting for us to turn to Him, in any situation.
In V. 3, we see that ‘when You lift Yourself up’, when God reveals Himself, He will be exalted. John 12:
32.
V. 7-9 ‘Valiant ones’ may be a sarcastic reference to the officials of Judah who had sought out the
alliance with Assyria. Now, they weep bitterly because the covenant had been broken. The highways
are destroyed, and the provinces of Sharon and Bashan and Carmel are devastated.
V. 10-13 The Lord will be lifted up, He will lift Himself. Assyria will be devoured.
V. 14-16 It’s not just Assyria who will be devoured. The ‘sinners’ in Zion have no more right to stand
before a Holy God than the Assyrians. In reality, who among us could stand before a Holy God?
In V. 15, we see that those who walk and speak righteously, who despise oppressions and turns aside
from bloodshed and evil…that one will ‘dwell on high’. He will be given bread and water, and Jesus is
the living bread, the living water.
V. 17-19 Here is where the coming Jesus is revealed. His Kingdom will stretch to a land that is very far
off’. This is likely a reference to the New Heaven and the New Earth.
Where our hearts meditated on the terror inflicted by the Assyrians, we will then ask where is the
scribe? The scribe represents those who collected tribute from Judah for Assyria.
From V. 19, we will no longer see the fierce people whose speech we don’t understand.
V. 20-21 Zion, the city of Jerusalem will be a ‘quiet home’ and the tabernacle there will never be taken
down. King David wrote in Psalm 23 that God would lead us beside still waters and to rest in green
pastures. This is the picture of V. 21.
V. 22 This is an incredible verse, outlining the future governments of most places in the modern world.
The LORD will be our Judge, Lawgiver and King. In the US, we have the Judicial Branch, the Legislative
Branch and the Executive Branch. Judge, lawgiver and ‘king’.
We all know that governmental leaders are imperfect. In the New Heaven, God will replace all this with
His perfection.
V. 23-24 Sickness and sin will be removed forever.
