18.4 Let’s Practice…
1. Luke in 20:17 says Paul called to him the elders of the Ephesian church, how should we
understand the term “elders” in this context and why?
2. In 20:18, 19 Paul reminded the elders of the work he had done among them, how does
he express emotions over the plots of the Jews?
3. Paul taught all that people needed whether in public or from house to house (20:20), how
important is it to teach both in public and in private?
4. Why was Paul so determined to go up to Jerusalem despite the testimony of the Holy Spirit that
chains and tribulations awaited him there (20:22-24).
5. Why did Paul declare that he stood innocent of the blood of all men (20:26, 27), and how does
that affect us, as preachers today?
6. List at least four responsibilities which Paul gave to the elders (20:28-35):
18.5 Let’s Personalize this Lesson…
Have you ever wondered what your last words would be if you knew you would never
see your people again? Drawing from Paul’s speech I will challenge you with four facts
that may need to be considered in this busy and greedy generation: Firstly, Paul pointed
out that he served them with no regard for personal cost (17-21). Do you so much cry
out about your personal cost in ministry? Secondly, Paul declared that he always put
Jesus first in every choice (18-23). What do you consider first in your entire decision
making? Thirdly, Paul emphasized that he told them the truth (25-32). Are you determined to forget
about your self-gain and fame for the sake of preaching truth? Paul challenged that he was a giver
not a taker (33-38). Are you always crying about not being paid enough by the church, or are you one
of those who interpret every verse in the Bible in terms of giving which you yourself don’t practice?
To be a true and successful minister of God’s Word, we must absolutely surrender ourselves to God’s
usage, not for any other purpose.
