rebel." - Al-Ma'idah (The Table Spread) 5:47
o Following the Bible causes one to be admitted to Paradise.
"If only the People of the Book had believed and been righteous, We should indeed
have blotted out their iniquities and admitted them to gardens of bliss. If only they had
stood fast by the Law, the Gospel, and all the revelation that was sent to them from
their Lord, they would have enjoyed happiness from every side. There is from among
them a party on the right course; but many of them follow a course that is evil. " Al-
Ma'idah (The Table Spread) 5:65-66
o Muslims are not supposed to argue with Jews or Christians concerning the prior scriptures,
since the Qur'an is not supposed to contradict the other holy books.
"And dispute ye not with the People of the Book, except with means better (than mere
disputation), unless it be with those of them who inflict wrong (and injury); but say, 'We
believe in the revelation which has come down to us and in that which came down to
you; Our Allah and your Allah is one; and it is to Him we bow (in Islam).'" - Al-Anka-boot
(The Spider) 29:46 This Surah implies that the Christian scriptures were valid up to the
time of Qur'anic revelation.
o Muslims should believe in the prior scriptures.
"But those among [the Jews and Christians] who are well- grounded in knowledge, and
the believers, believe in what hath been revealed to thee and what was revealed before
thee..." - Al-Nisa' (Women) 4:162
"Say ye: 'We believe in Allah, and the revelation given to us, and to Abraham, Isma'il, Isaac,
Jacob, and the Tribes, and that given to Moses and Jesus, and that given to (all) prophets
from their Lord; we make no difference between one and another of them; and we bow
to Allah (in submission).'" - Al-Baqara (The Cow) 2:136
o Muhammad was to appeal to Jews and Christians (and their
Scriptures) when he was in doubt.
"But if you are in doubt as to what We have revealed to
you, ask those who read the Book before you; certainly the truth has come to you from
your Lord, therefore you should
not be of the disputers." - Yunus (Jonah) 10:95
o God kept the previous scriptures from corruption.
"To thee We sent the Scripture in truth, confirming the
scripture that came before it, and guarding it in safety: so
judge between them by what Allah hath revealed..." - Al-
Ma'idah (The Table) 5:48
"(It is) in Books held (greatly) in honor, exalted (in dignity),
kept pure and holy, written by the hands of scribes -
honor-able and pious and just." - Abasa (He Frowned)
80:13-16
• The Qur'an claims that Jesus was taught and accepted the truth of the Tawrat and the Zabur during his
lifetime.
o The Qur'an gives no indication that any of the manuscripts of the Tawrat (Torah) and Zabur
(Psalms) prior to or during the life of Jesus are in error.
o "And Allah will teach him (Jesus) the Book and Wisdom, the Law and the Gospel, And will make
him a messenger unto the Children of Israel, (saying): Lo! I come unto you with a sign from your
Lord. Lo! I fashion for you out of clay the likeness of a bird, and I breathe into it and it is a bird, by
Allah's leave. I heal him who was born blind, and the leper, and I raise the dead, by Allah's leave.
And I announce unto you what ye eat and what ye store up in your houses. Lo! herein verily is a
