book of Romans. This book will build on the foundation of Genesis but will also ground him/her in the
foundational doctrines of the Christian faith.
Matthew 4:4 “Man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of
God.”
2. Prayer
Prayer is simply talking with God. Before sin entered into the world Adam
and Eve met and spoke with God daily. Prayer is simply speaking with your
heavenly Father. It does not have to be with flowery words or phrases, nor
does it have to be for long periods of time. It is just a time to express love
to Him, needs you might have, concerns about friends and others, etc.
Pray with your new disciple and teach him to pray. Conduct a short study
on prayer so that the new believer can see how God uses prayer to accomplish His will.
A good anachronism for prayer is the word, ACTS. A stands for Adoration. Start your prayer out
recognizing God for who He is and praising His Holy name. C stands for Confession. Teach your new
believer the truths of I John 1:9 in dealing with sin that will be inevitable in their lives, even after
salvation. T stands for Thanksgiving. Have your disciple spend time listing and thanking God for all He
has done both materially and spiritually in their lives. S stands for Supplication. This is praying for the
needs of others and for their own needs. This is the part of prayer that asks God for meeting the needs
of others.
In his article on prayer, Robert Velarde gives this definition of prayer:
Prayer is a relationship, wherein we humbly communicate, worship, and sincerely seek God's face,
knowing that He hears us, loves us and will respond, though not always in a manner we may expect or
desire. Prayer can encompass confession, praise, adoration, supplication, intercession and more.
The central concept in prayer is that it is genuine communication with God in order to build a
relationship with Him. It allows us to worship and praise the Lord. It offers us the means to confess our
sins which should lead to our genuine repentance and holy walk. Prayer grants us the opportunity to
present our requests to God. Through prayer, we are communicating with our Creator. He is personal,

He is caring, and He is desirous that we commune with Him through prayer.
2 Chronicles 7:14 … if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek
my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will
heal their land.
Isaiah 40:29-31 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow
tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their
strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be
faint.
Hebrews 4:15-16 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses,
but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are - yet was without sin. Let us then
