Holy Spirit and the Millennium
At the end of the Tribulation, the Second Coming of Christ will
occur. He will establish the Millennial Kingdom and then
pronounce three different judgments (of living Gentiles, of living
Jews, and of Old Testament and tribulation saints; cf. Joel 3:1-2;
Matt 25:31-46; Ezek. 20:34-38; Matt 25:1-30; Dan 12:2-3; Matt
16:17; Rev 20:4-6). Jesus Christ will also throw into the lake of fire
the Antichrist and his false prophet (Rev 19:20), then have Satan
bound for the entire millennial reign (Rev 20:1-3). The millennial reign of Christ will last for one thousand
years. During this time, peace will rule and “it appears that at that moment all who enter [the millennial
kingdom] will be redeemed.” So, how will the Holy Spirit function during this period? Will there still be the
need for Him?
During the thousand years, people will need personal salvation just as they need it now. They will still be
born with a nature to sin and in need of redemption. The Holy Spirit must be and will be active in the lives
of these unregenerate people born in the millennium, by doing what He has always done in bringing people
to repentance and faith. This work of salvation is related to the Spirit in the case of Israel and the fulfillment
of her new covenant (Isa 59:21; Ezekiel 36:25-28; Zech. 12:10; 14:16). Yet, despite the Holy Spirit's work,
there will be those who reject Christ (Rev 20:7-9).
The Holy Spirit will also work during the Millennial Kingdom in the hearts of Israel. Isaiah 59:21 alludes
explicitly to this: “‘As for Me, this is My covenant with them,’ says the LORD: ‘My Spirit which is upon you’”
and Ezekiel 36:27 confirms, “I will put My Spirit within you.” According to Joel 2:28- 29, this relationship of
the Holy Spirit also includes His filling as well as indwelling, serving “as a permanent witness of the
‘covenant of peace’ and the ‘covenant of eternity.’ The Holy Spirit will bring the blessings of the New
Covenant, including national restoration in the Promised Land, the writing of Scripture on the minds and
hearts of all Jews, pure worship, forgiveness of sins, and material prosperity to Israel as promised in
Jeremiah 31:31-34.
