scattered seed. 25 So I was afraid and went out and hid your talent in the ground. See, here is
what belongs to you.’ 26 “His master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest
where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? 27 Well then, you should have
put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back
with interest. 28 “ ‘Take the talent from him and give it to the one who has the ten talents. 29 For
everyone who has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have,
even what he has will be taken from him. 30 And throw that worthless servant outside, into the
darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

The first servant reported that he had doubled the master’s investment for him and received a very
good commendation and eternal reward. (vv. 19-21) The second servant reported that he had doubled
the master’s investment for him and received a very good commendation and eternal reward. (vv. 22-
23) But the third servant had not even tried to use the money for his master’s benefit, and he received a
rebuke, loss of eternal reward, and discipline befitting an unfaithful servant. (vv. 24-30)

Jesus was challenging His followers to be motivated by His possible commendation and eternal rewards.
Jesus left this earth to claim His kingdom and will evaluate the Christian life of each believer on
evaluation day. Other passages also reveal this evaluation day when believers will be evaluated by their
bridegroom.

Romans 14:10–12 (NIV84)10 You, then, why do you judge your brother? Or why do you look down
on your brother? For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat. 11 It is written: “ ‘As surely as I
live,’ says the Lord, ‘every knee will bow before me; every tongue will confess to God.’ ” 12 So then,
each of us will give an account of himself to God.

2 Corinthians 5:9–10 (NIV84)9 So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in
the body or away from it. 10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each
one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.

1 Corinthians 3:10–15 (NIV84)10 By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert
builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should be careful how he builds. 11 For no
one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 If any man
builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, 13 his work will be
shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire
will test the quality of each man’s work. 14 If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward.
15 If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through
the flames.

1 John 2:28 (NIV84)28 And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears we may
be confident and unashamed before him at his coming.

Any believer who sacrificially serves Jesus Christ will receive a commendation and eternal rewards for all
of eternity. In this parable each servant was given a different amount of responsibility, according to their
capabilities.

A steward should be found to be faithful. (1 Cor. 4:2)
