               5.5 Let’s Personalize this Lesson….

As with the other OT scriptures, we do well to read the psalms with Christ in mind. They
ultimately point to him. The disappointments of ancient Israel with daily life pushed them
to trust in a coming Messiah. The triumphs of both individuals and the nation as a whole
gave them a glimpse of what life would be like when the Christ would appear. In fact, the
depth of joy found in the Psalms was intended partially as a call to those nations around
Israel, “Look at our God, isn’t he great?” “May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face
shine on us – so that your ways may be known on earth, your salvation among all nations. May the
peoples praise you, God; may all the peoples praise you (Ps. 67:1-2).”

This is why the psalms were written, organized, and preserved. Our efforts to follow the pattern of the
original writers will discover an abundance of spiritual vitality in them and in us. May we not neglect this
“duty” but find it pleasant in leading us further to Christ.
