Day 4 – Genesis 1:14-19 – Day 4 Creation of the Sun, Moon and Stars
14 And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night.
15
And let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years, and let them be lights in the expanse
16
of the heavens to give light upon the earth.” And it was so. And God made the two great lights—the
17
greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars. And God set them in
18
the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, to rule over the day and over the night, and to
separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there
19
was morning, the fourth day. (ESV)
God established not only the solar day, but the week, month, and seasons of the year. The pattern for
the chronology was set in place.
Distant Star Light Problem
Sometimes Christians are reluctant to discuss the age of the universe. The Bible states that God created
in six days, and its genealogies clearly indicate that this took place only a few thousand years ago. But
some people reason, “Hasn’t science demonstrated that it would take billions of years for the light from
the farthest galaxies to reach the earth? Doesn’t this disprove the Genesis account or force us to
interpret the words differently?”
Not at all.
Remember, God created the entire universe with apparent age. From the days of creation, everything
was fully mature, and the entire eco-structure was fully interrelating. All systems were in place as if they
had been operating for thousands of years.
We should also remember that God is not limited to natural methods as we are. God could have easily
made the light not only emanate from stars, but He could have created the light on its path along the
way at the same time. Remember, God created a fully mature universe.
Remember, the objections to light travel are based on the speed of light as we know it today. If the
speed of light were faster in previous years, then our calculations of light-speed in the past may be
significantly altered.
Ironically, the leading secular alternative to the Bible (the big bang) has a light-travel time problem of its
own. Known as the “horizon problem,” the big bang is unable to get light from one side of the universe
to the other within its own “billions-of-years” timeframe. To alleviate this problem, big bang
23
supporters must arbitrarily add another hypothesis like “inflation” (which has problems of its own).
Even if our current creation models turn out to be wrong, there is no need to be embarrassed by
distant starlight. For we rely upon the revealed Word of God as our starting point. Unlike the shifting
opinions of men, such a foundation cannot fail. It boldly declares that on Day Four “He made the stars
also” (Genesis 1:16).
