12.5 Let’s Personalize this Lesson…

Isn’t it wonderful that our faith is validated by observable data? For example, we have total
faith in God’s Word, the Bible. We believe it is true, cover to cover. But skeptics have
attacked it for years. They claim the Bible is not historically accurate and that it contains a
bunch of fairy tales. For example, for years skeptics claimed there was never a Roman
governor who ruled in Judea called Pontius Pilate. They had never found evidence in any
writings of his existence. So if Pilate was not ruler in Judea, perhaps he never encountered Jesus, who
may not also have ever existed.

In June, 1961, Italian archaeologists led by Dr. Frova were excavating an
ancient Roman amphitheater close to Caesarea by the Sea (Maritima)
and unearthed a limestone block. On the face is a tombstone inscription
which is a fraction of a bigger devotion to Tiberius Caesar which evidently
tells that it was from “Pontius Pilate, Prefect of Judea.” This discovery
validated the fact that Pontius Pilate really did exist, and that what was
disclosed about him in God’s Word is true.

Isn’t it comforting to know that the evidence supports God’s Word in which we have based our faith?
