10. When Jacob told God he would give 10% of his wealth to God in order to protect him from Esau, he
was making a ___________________________ vow.
11. The New Testament teaches ___________________ as the pattern for believers to give to the Lord.
12. The problem with putting believers today under the yoke of the tithe is that you are teaching them
that ________________ belongs to the Lord and ________________ belongs to them.
13. In Matthew 23:23, Jesus was condemning the Pharisees because they were tithing mint, dill, and
cumin. What was wrong with that? Why did Jesus condemn them for neglecting the weightier
provisions of the law?
14. What is the difference between a tithe and an offering?
15. Please cite a verse in the New Testament that encourages believers to set aside 10% of their gross
income and give it to the church (the Lord) every Sunday morning.
5.5 Let’s Personalize this Lesson…
We have learned that the Old Testament Law required every Israelite to present to the Levites
three tithes each year, averaging 23.3% of the first fruits of their crops and herds. They did not
tithe money but could send money to the temple in place of goods if transport was an issue.
They did not tithe on any other source of income.
Jesus condemned the Pharisees for their attitude in keeping the tithe. They not only added additional
rules to the LAW, but, in pride, thought God would be pleased with them because they were actually
tithing MORE than what is expected by God.
Today, the preacher teaches his church about the tithe, but most of the details are left out. He does,
however, concentrate on the 10%! He is putting his members under the Old Testament LAW system
and leaving out the details, even though he may preach GRACE from the pulpit regarding our salvation.
If he wants to place the church under the Law of the Tithe, then, he should place the church under all
the dietary laws, the Law of the Sabbath, and the other 611 commandments and rules of the Old
Testament Law.
If you are a preacher, you might want to restudy this portion of Scripture and present a new and better
way of giving to your people because the New Testament has a lot to say about how the church is to
give and manage God’s wealth! We will see what it is in the next lesson.
If you are a pastor, once you learn what God’s plan is for His church today, you might want to prepare a
sermon and teach your congregation the truth.
