This picture on the previous page was drawn by a man named Stephen Wiltshire. He has the ability to
draw a landscape from memory after only seeing it once. He has also been diagnosed with autism: “a
developmental disorder of variable severity that is characterized by difficulty in social interaction and
communication and by restricted or repetitive patterns of thought and behavior.” 141
Psychologist Howard Gardner identified a total of eight types of intelligences that are relatively
independent of each other. To Gardner, a general intelligence score (like school tests that are given to
pass a grade level) is like giving a city a rating. This would tell you something about the city, but it
wouldn’t give you much specific information about its schools, streets, crime, restaurants, churches, etc.
Gardner feels that people can be intelligent in many different ways. Take a look at the following chart
which explains Gardner’s theory on eight types of intelligence:
