Practical Application: God gives warnings so we will not have to suffer His wrath. Judgment is certain if
God’s warnings are not heeded and His provision for sin in the sacrifice of His Son is rejected. For the
believer in Christ, God will discipline us—not from hate—but because He loves us. He knows that sin
destroys, and He wants us to be whole. This wholeness which is the promise of restoration awaits those
who remain obedient to Him. cxxiv
Jesus was born in Bethlehem!!!
The prophet Micah predicted that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem. Micah 5:2 says,
But thou, Beth-lehem Ephrathah, which art little to be among the thousands of Judah, out of thee shall
one come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth are from of old, from
everlasting.(ESV)
Micah gave another prophecy that even told the EXACT location in Bethlehem where the Christ child
would be birthed. I bet you did not know that. Here it is:
Micah 4:7-8 “And the lame I will make the remnant, and those who were cast off, a strong nation; and
the Lord will reign over them in Mount Zion (Jerusalem) from this time forth and forevermore. And you,
O tower of the flock, hill of the daughter of Zion, to you shall (he – Messiah) come, kingship for the
daughter of Jerusalem.
Because of this prophecy, the Old Testament saints looked for the Messiah to revealed from the Tower
of the Flock, known as Migdal Eder. Midgal Eder was
1000 paces outside of Bethlehem and was an actual
building a couple stories high. This was a tower built
specially to care for the flocks which were birthed there
and destined for the Temple sacrifices. The shepherds
who watched over them were not ordinary shepherds;
they watched over the Temple sheep year-round. “This
shall be a sign unto you…” The shepherds already knew
the spot…for the sign of a manger meant the manger at
Migdal Eder – “the tower of the flock” as foretold them
from the prophet Micah. The entire life of the Messiah
was pictured at Migdal Eder -- a lamb born on the Day of
Atonement and prepared for death in Jerusalem as a
sacrifice for sin. The Tower of the Flock – Migdal Eder
Remember, David was raised in Bethlehem. It is very possible that He was a shepherd who cared for the
sheep at the Tower of the Flock. Those shepherds were called Temple shepherds and they held a special
honor in caring for the sacrificial lambs.
