Study Section 13: Different Ways to Study God’s Word
13.1 Connect.
You can take several approaches to studying God’s Word. No one approach is better than the
other; you however, often come up with different insights into the verses you are studying.
Today we are going to look at two approaches to studying God’s Word.
13.2 Objectives.
1. The student should be able to explain how to study Scripture using the Devotional Bible Study
approach.
2. The student should be able to explain that by studying the Bible devotionally, he will discover
that he must to background research on the passage if we want to glean the real truths presented in the
passage.
3. The student should be able to review the sample lesson to try the devotional method.
13.3 Different Ways to Study God’s Word
There are two main approaches to studying God’s Word. They are:
Devotional Bible Study: The purpose of this type of study is to get to
KNOW God and to DO HIS WILL. This is the most important type of
study you can do. This study means you study the Word of God in
order that you may hear God’s voice personally and that you may
know how to do His will and to live more like Christ on a daily basis. A
devotional study may incorporate the necessity to study the passage
for knowledge, as well.
Study for Bible Knowledge. The purpose of this type of study is to probe the depths of God’s Word - to
get to the real meat of the passages and better understand God’s original thoughts which He penned.
Studying the Bible Devotionally
Previously, we learned that it is absolutely essential to know four things about the passage of Scripture:
the language, the culture, the geography, and history at the time of the writing of the passage. Even
with a devotional study approach, it is important to ascertain truths about each of these as we sit down
to read. So, as we approach a practice passage of scripture, let’s attempt to find out what we can about
these four areas:
