Our Lord said to St. Gertrude: That you may be assured
with what tender condescension I receive those who
repent of their sins with true compunction of heart and a
firm resolution to avoid all sin in future, know that my
heart is touched with ineffable sweetness of delight
whenever a sinner recalls to mind with true sorrow of
heart that he has wandered far from me by the alienation
of his heart, or by vain and idle words, of by sinful or
useless actions. Whence it comes to pass that, whenever
he remembers his sins, saying with true compunction of
soul these or any like words: Alas, unhappy man that I

am! How have I squandered and wasted the time in
which I have not lived for thee, my Lord and my God,
who hast so loved me! in the meekness and humbleness
of my heart I take up his words, and set them forth
before God the Father with a harmony so ravishing,
drawn from the depths of my Divinity, that all the
heavenly host of blessed spirits break forth into joyous
song. And thus it is that there is such joy in heaven upon
one sinner that doth penance. And whenever I bring forth
any faithful through the gate of death into the heavenly
court, besides the endearments with which I enchant his
disenthralled soul all along that wonderous way, I
shared upon him all the joy which I together with all the
heavenly host, have felt whenever with true compunction
of heart he has done penance on earth. 187
