On the beaches and coves of the island you find planked outriggers with
the cross members attached to hull and float by way of rubber lashings,
culled from automotive inner tubes. Friction and stretch do all the work
and there is not a knot in sight.
On the Pacific island of lie des Pins, south of New Caledonia, outriggers
are still made from logs with both the main hull and the float hollowed
out. Synthetic rope purchased from the stores in Noumea is used for lash¬
ings and rigging. Even so, knots are still conspicuously absent.
