Whitney’s Hotel - Henry’s Hotel (1835-1867)
Barker eventually sold the hotel in 1835 to Samuel Whitney who ran it
until 1856. Whitney raised the north wing to a third story and built a hall
over the woodshed in 1838. Whitney had a partner named Palmer in
1847. Whitney sold the hotel to Gilman Henry in 1856. The business was
known then as Henry’s Hotel and like the Eagle Temperance Hotel, exclud-
ed the selling of “intoxicating spirits”. In 1861, Henry improved the hall
by extending it down east on Central Street, with a narrow passageway be-
