Into the Body
At first blush
Hurts a girl:
She knows it
Shows her thoughts.
Then she learns
It shows she
Knows the thoughts
Of others.
Self-imagery can become a complex game of reflection and
projection. Blushing is an autonomic vascular response to fear, an
embarrassment in itself because it is so revealing. Reflection evolves
into projection once it becomes desirable to manifest that
embarrassment (not socially perceived as linked to fear). In our
culture blushing has functioned in girls as an indicator of modesty;
as they grow into women, they may find the reflex useful to
communicate without words an awareness of what that modesty
conceals.
