Trying too much to prove
That you’re not running away,
After a while requires
Proof you’re not going to stay.
Another sort of excess is that of the reformer, whose zeal
transmogrifies self-destructiveness into self-righteousness. That
over-reaction ultimately prompts others to question the protester’s
sincerity: can he not get off the soapbox and live without his
monotonous obsession? Gluckman implies an irony of rationality
carried so far that it arrives at its opposite.
