Into the World
I’ve no taste for accounting;
I say accounting’s a waste.
My suspicion is mounting:
There’s no accounting for taste.
This word-shuffle is a little joke at the expense of Gluckman’s
source of income. He worked at teaching computers to replace
clerks, an occasionally distasteful occupation. But the work of
posting and calculating endless debits and credits is a waste of
human beings; it’s far better left to machines. In that sense, the
second couplet conveys his surprise that anyone wants to be an
accountant in this day and age.
