“Oh, an Asian martial art. I’ve been studying it after school and on
weekends for years.”
I must have been gawking like a simpleton. “Why on earth would
you do that?”
“Mr. Holloman, if you were a girl and had three older brothers,
you would do the same thing.”
And that was the end of it. For me, at any rate. Had I failed in my
duty as counselor? Should I have spotted the criminal in our midst
before she did? I don’t know, but I was some sort of help to her, at
least as a pawn in her chess game, and the experience did have a
profound effect on her later life. When she showed up at her tenth
class reunion, she told me that she had become a detective. I think
she was born a detective.
