unable to comprehend the choreography. One Surfoid clearly was in
charge, constantly moving among his followers, setting forth rhythms,
bits of song and dance steps.

Captain Kaga closed his eyes and dozed off again, idly wondering
what the problem was at Lugo’s post; superficially, it seemed like a
fairly simple operation. He awoke when the ship’s engines flipped into
deceleration. A disembodied voice informed him that ETA on Bolix
was minus ten minutes. He strapped himself in more tightly, waiting
for the cushioned impact of landing.
The first individual Kaga encountered on Bolix was a Surfoid
