Settling the Strike on the Plateau
out of the way when disaster strikes. Then I’ll use the emergency
deepspace transmitter to notify GHQ. I’ll have to tell them that this
plateau is very unstable, not a fit location for our base. Then they’ll
come out and tidy things up, apologize for the inconvenience, and it
will be back to business as usual. In fact, in terms of labor relations,
the Lower Echelons may get some back pay: I don’t suppose the
Elders will want to keep their old mirrors once the new ones start
coming from the lowlands again.”
“Why, that’s perfect!” exclaimed Lugo. “No one will accuse me of
making a mistake. And no one expects those charts to show every
last little feature of the terrain.”
“Quite right,” said Kaga. “Now I’ve got to go out and do a little
creative geology with a particle beam generator. Those Oolyakooans
flying around out there aren’t likely to attack me, are they?”
“I don’t think so. They know where the mirrors come from.”
“Fine,” rejoined Captain Kaga. “You pack up your things, and
tonight we can talk over old times.” He headed for the door, maps in
hand. “And remember: whatever happens after you leave, it’s
nobody’s fault but mine.”
