The councilman scrutinized the abstruse language of the indicated
passages. “Spectrum analysis. Epidermal profiles. Programmable
thresholds of discriminability. Selective wavelength disabling delivery
systems. Man, this is heavy reading! But I don’t see anything about
drugs. You say you got this from Transglobal Technologies?”
“That’s right. You can check on that, Councilman. In fact, there’s
a toll-free number printed right on the back, in case you have any
questions. But the real questions you’ve got are for Chief Drubble.
You hear what I’m saying?”
Swiller looked up from the TTI manual. There was fire in his eyes.
“Yes, indeed I do, Miss Welby. And I must thank you for performing
this civic service. I’m going to take this document into the council
meeting and shove it down Chief Drubble’s throat. This is an
outrageous racist assault on the citizenry! Mark my words: by
tomorrow, we are going to be looking for a new chief of police! He
won’t get by with this one!”
“Good for you, Councilman!” May Wellby zipped up her purse
and got to her feet. “I’m sure the press will be in attendance at that
meeting. And the company that makes that terrible thing is going to
get in plenty of trouble, too. My niece’s husband wants to get a
different job, anyway; those old military contractors aren’t going to
make it if this is how they convert to peacetime.”
