TotalCare
and the pharmaceutical guy—Tommy—is going to sell him cut-rate
the stuff to do it with.”
“You’re kidding.” But O’Leary’s brows were raised.
“They weren’t. According to Tommy, he can legally prescribe
this Panasol for hundreds of cases of stomachache and nausea and
send the patients home without further examination. Some of those
cases really are something more serious—I can’t pronounce the name
of it; it’s on the tape—but he can save millions by not sending all
those people to a diagnostic lab for a bunch of complicated medical
tests. So all these people are taking Panasol four times a day, right?
Now, get this: the ones with that horrible disease will die quickly
because of the drug, so they won’t cost TotalCare—the HMO that
Les runs—very much more time and money.”
Brock’s eyes widened. “And the other guy—Tommy—he goes
along with that?”
“Yeah. It seems he has to dump a lot of the stuff on the American
market since he can’t push it overseas any more. He’ll let Les have his
whole inventory at a discount.”
“Jeez!” Agent O’Leary turned back to his periscope. “A couple of
mass murderers! Better get the FDA and local police authorities
involved in this one. We’ll give those two enough rope to hang
themselves and then shut them down. Ought to look good on our
records, eh, Dex? Not as good as a real drug bust, but what the hell.”
