Thursday mornings a garbage truck rumbled down the alley,
clearing the buffet of anything a night-prowler might consider edible.
Three scruffy tomcats, indigent scavengers who frequented the area,
would then fight over the last few scraps of cheese rind and bacon
trimmings, and finally settle down to nap all afternoon, basking in the
waning toxic hazy glow of the setting sun. On one such evening, as
darkness descended upon the scene, the felines started waking up.
