Once the doc worked out what was causing the problem – perhaps you’d been chomped in two by an angry crocodile, for instance, and were feeling a little under the weather –
they could work out what treatment to offer.

But unlike today, there were no handy pills from the chemist.
Back then treatments may have used spices such as cinnamon or pepper or less appealing ingredients such as mud or dung. So next time you see a cow pat, pop it in your pocket – it might come in handy when you’re feeling a bit dodgy.
Another treatment included the blood of a bird, flies’ blood, honey and salt.
Errr, thanks, Doc . . . suddenly we feel much better. No need for medicine after all. Byeee!
