Back to hairstyles, and a really distinctive one you might have seen being worn by a visitor to the castle was that of a monk. They’d have a ring of hair going right round their head, but the top of their noggin was shaved bald!
To be honest, I think I prefer monkey style to monk style.
Why not try asking for a monk’s hairstyle next time you’re at the salon, to give your parents a nice surprise? Just make sure you don’t ask for a monkey’s style by mistake or the barber will cover you in glue, stick loads of hair all over you and give you a banana.
And there’s nothing medieval or castley about that.
Do you ever wish . . . you could get a brilliant new game to play because you’re SO bored with the ones you have?
How about ‘Chase the Chicken’? It involves you chasing, you know, a chicken. And that’s it.
It might not sound like the kind of thing that’s likely to be released as the next big video game, but back in medieval castle days, it was the in thing – at Easter at least.
During holidays and festivals, games like that would have been played, along with lots of other activities – some of which we still do today, like painting and rolling Easter eggs.
On saints’ days, children dressed as priests or bishops and went round houses asking for money or food. You could always try doing that now, but you’ll probably end up being taken home by the police.
At Halloween, kids put on masks and asked for cakes. We’re guessing the masks weren’t plastic and bought in supermarkets though.
Christmas was a time of sharing. Medieval peeps decorated their castles with mistletoe and ivy, and the big cheeses invited peasants in for a slap-up meal of breads, soup, meat, wine and ale. And then grandpa fell asleep in front of the fire and did sprout-flavour bottom burps, which is and always has been the law.
Watch out! The chicken’s getting away!
