In THE BIGWOOF CONSPIRACY, Lucy found that the Truth can come at a high cost: in choosing to protect her neighbours by not exposing Fisher’s Nucralose exper- iments, she lost an important friendship with Milo and cast aside her dreams of becoming the first person to expose the inexplicable wonders of the universe. But because she kept their secret, two of the “Pretenders” revealed to her that they can shapeshift into animals at will. If only Lucy could tell someone, life would be per- fect!
In THE THING AT BLACK HOLE LAKE, Lucy came to understand that, although frequently effective, lying in service of the Truth is ultimately self-defeating. Further- more, ‘the Truth’ is in fact many truths, as both she and Milo interpreted the same events they experienced very differently. As always, unearthing the Truth revealed an- swers, but also raised many more questions...
In THE VALLEY OF THE STRANGE, Lucy will learn how the Truth can be hacked, and how people (particular-
ly adults, bullies, shapeshifting weirdoes and corporate overlords) can manipulate and exaggerate the Truth to their own ends. Navigating a preteen landscape where facts are skillfully distorted by her peers online, Lucy will learn just how easy it is for the Truth to be weaponised (something Mr Fisher will show he is only too aware of). By gaining a greater understanding of deception and dis- information, Lucy learns how to empower herself against it. Once again, she will discover, the Truth is not as simple as it seems.
