                             Stepping out again into the corridor, Mary set off the wrong way and was instantly lost. Every passageway looked the same. Windows rattled. Draughts made the rugs rear up like sea monsters. Shadows stretched themselves.
But someone else was more scared then she was. Someone somewhere was crying, and Mary was getting closer and closer to the sound!
Turning a corner, she saw – to her horror – Mrs Medlock coming towards her, face fretful and cross. It was crosser still when she saw Mary.
“Did I not tell you to keep to your own room, Miss?” Taking a fierce grip of her arm, Mrs Medlock dragged her back the way she had come.
