“Nonsense! You heard nothing of the kind. Now stay where you’re told, or must I lock you in?”
If Mrs Medlock was angry, Mary was angrier. As the housekeeper left, slamming the door behind her, Mary sat white-faced with rage. “There was someone crying. There was! And I’m going to find out who!”
