When she got back to the house, longing to tell Colin that spring had sprung, Martha stood waiting.
“It’s Master Colin. When tha’ did not visit, he started raging. There’s no keepin’ him quiet! Go an’ say tha’s sorry, will thee?”
Colin was back in bed. Mary marched over to him. “I was gardening with Dickon.”
Colin actually snarled. “I won’t let him come here if you like him better than me.”
Mary’s old ways uncoiled, like one of those poisonous snakes in India. “If you send Dickon away, I’ll never come here again.”
“You will if I want you to.”
“Won’t.”
“Will! I’ll make them bring you!”
“Oh yes? They can drag me here, but they can’t
make me talk to you!” And they glared at each other.
“Selfish thing!” cried Colin.
“Selfish people always say that. Anyone who doesn’t do what they want is ‘selfish’. You’re the most selfish boy I ever met.”
“Am not!” snapped Colin!” Mary’s eyes flashed. “Dickon’s
nicer than any boy that ever lived!” “Huh! My father has millions
more money than he’ll ever have!”
