“People aren’t worth less because they have less money than you and work harder. Rich, selfish, lazy boys are common as muck because they don’t know how to behave like gentlemen! Dickon is a gentleman!”
Colin was losing the argument and feeling sorry for himself. “My body’s rumpling up and I’m going to DI-I-I-EE!”
“Rubbish,” snapped Mary.
Colin gaped at her. “I am!”
“Don’t believe you. You only say it to make people pity you. You’re much
too nasty and contrary to die.”
Colin sat up to rage – “Get out!” – and threw a pillow at her.
It missed.
“I’m going, and I won’t come back,” said Mary.
Right outside the door Colin’s nurse was struggling not to laugh. “You’re the best thing
as ever happened to that spoiled boy! ’Bout time somebody told him what’s what!”
Still sad and angry, Mary went to bed. But at midnight she was woken by
a fearful din. Doors slammed, feet thudded, and someone was screaming. She put her hands over her ears.
The nurse ran into her room. “He’s throwing one of his tantrums. We can
do nothing with him. Do come and try, won’t you?”
