                             At last the little emperor sat down under the tree. “This was my mother’s garden, wasn’t it?” he said to Ben.
“It was. She were right fond of it.”
“It’s mine now. Dickon and Mary have worked and made it come alive. You can help sometimes – but you must come here in secret.”
Ben smiled. “I did come here now an’ again, till my old knees stopped me. Climbed over that wall an’ did a bit o’ work. Be easier coming in at t’door.”
“Thank you,” said Colin. Then he reached out and picked up Mary’s trowel and drove it into the ground. “I’m digging, look. Fetch me a rose to plant. Quick! Before the sun goes down!”
