The body was cleaned with spices and palm wine and covered in a
special kind of salt called for 40 days,
before being washed. The empty chest and
the stomach would be filled with linen, earth
or sometimes resin.
Finally, the dead
person was wrapped
in strips of linen.
Amulets of protection
were placed within the layers of linen and a mask was put on its head. The mummy would be placed in a colourful wooden coffin painted with protective spells, to help them on their journey to the afterlife.
