The
was one of the most influential guilds in
the city because so many people worked in that industry. Florence
cathedral was completed after the guild held a competition to design the dome. Before this competition was held,
the cathedral remained unfinished for
80 years!
As well as being a place for people
to pray, the inside of the cathedral was covered in pieces of sculpture and paintings for people to admire. It was also a place where teenagers could meet to gossip as well as pray.
